A step-by-step checklist for the first minutes, hours and days after a crash in Colorado, from staying safe to filing the claim and choosing who repairs your car.
A crash is stressful even when nobody is hurt. This checklist walks you through what matters, in order, so you can protect yourself, your claim and your car.
1. Make sure everyone is safe
Check yourself and your passengers first. If anyone is injured, call 911. If the cars can be moved and it is safe to do so, move them out of traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
2. Call the police when it's required
Colorado law requires drivers to report a crash to police when anyone is injured or killed, and in many property-damage situations as well. When in doubt, call the local non-emergency line or 911 and let the dispatcher tell you whether an officer will respond. Ask for the report number before you leave.
3. Exchange information
Get the other driver's name, phone number, driver's license number, license plate, and insurance company and policy number. Note the make, model and color of every vehicle involved. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and phone numbers.
4. Document everything
Take photos of all vehicles from several angles, the damage up close, the road, traffic signs, skid marks and the weather. Photos taken at the scene are the most useful evidence your insurer will see. Avoid discussing fault — just stick to the facts.
5. Start your insurance claim
Call your insurer or use their app as soon as you can. Have your policy number, the police report number and your photos ready. Your adjuster will explain your coverage and next steps.
6. You choose the repair shop
Colorado law protects your right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. Your insurer may suggest a shop, but the decision is yours. Look for a shop with manufacturer certifications for your vehicle and I-CAR Gold Class training, and one that will work directly with your insurance company. Our guide on how to choose an auto body shop covers what to ask.
7. Don't ignore "minor" damage
Modern bumpers and panels hide sensors, cameras and crumple structures. A small-looking dent can affect driver-assist systems that need calibration after repair. Have the car inspected even if it still drives.
